چکیده

This paper proposes the utilization of randomized backtracking within complete backtrack search algorithms for propositional satisfiability (SAT). In recent years, randomization has become pervasive in SAT algorithms. Incomplete algorithms for SAT, for example the ones based on local search, often resort to randomization. Complete algorithms also resort to randomization. These include state-of-the-art backtrack search SAT algorithms that often randomize variable selection heuristics. Moreover, it is plain that the introduction of randomization in other components of backtrack search SAT algorithms can potentially yield new competitive search strategies. As a result, we propose a stochastic backtrack search algorithm for SAT, that randomizes both the variable selection and the backtrack steps of the algorithm. In addition, we relate randomized backtracking with a more general form of backtracking, referred to as unrestricted backtracking. Finally, experimental results for different organizations of randomized backtracking are described and compared, providing empirical evidence that the new search algorithm for SAT is a very competitive approach for solving hard real-world instances. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Propositional satisfiability: Techniques, algorithms and applications

Recent years have seen remarkable progress in propositional satisfiability (SAT), with significant theoretical and practical contributions. Algorithmic solutions for SAT include, among others, local search, backtrack search and formula manipulation techniques. Despite the worst-case exponential run time of all known algorithms, SAT solvers can currently be used to solve hard benchmark problems....

Exact phase transition of backtrack-free search with implications on the power of greedy algorithms

Backtracking is a basic strategy to solve constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs). A satisfiable CSP instance is backtrack-free if a solution can be found without encountering any dead-end during a backtracking search, implying that the instance is easy to solve. We prove an exact phase transition of backtrack-free search in some random CSPs, namely in Model RB and in Model RD. This is the firs...

Heuristic-Based Backtracking for Propositional Satisfiability

In recent years backtrack search algorithms for Propositional Satisfiability (SAT) have been the subject of dramatic improvements. These improvements allowed SAT solvers to successfully solve instances with thousands of variables and hundreds of thousands of clauses, and also motivated the development of many new challenging problem instances, many of which still too hard for the current genera...

Conflict Analysis in Search Algorithms for Propositional Satisfiability

This paper introduces GRASP (Generic seaRch Algorithm for the Satisfiability Problem), a new search algorithm for Propositional Satisfiability (SAT). GRASP incorporates several search-pruning techniques, some of which are specific to SAT, whereas others find equivalent in other fields of Artificial Intelligence. GRASP is premised on the inevitability of conflicts during search and its most dist...
